How to Prepare Your Design for T-Shirt Printing: A Practical Guide

July 4, 2025 by Ellen Laurente

Designing a T-shirt might seem easy—just throw on a logo or artwork and hit print, right?

Not quite.

The best printed tees come from thoughtful planning. Whether you’re a graphic designer, fashion brand, or first-timer creating shirts for an event, the final result depends on how well you prepare your design—and how much you understand your fabric, colour, and printing choices.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what really matters when preparing your design for print. You’ll learn what makes fabric important, how colours behave differently on shirts, and which printing method is right for your vision.

By the end, you’ll know exactly how to take your design from screen to shirt—and why Custom T Shirt Printing Online is the professional partner you need.

Fabric First: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Before you touch your design software or think about colours, start with the fabric. The fabric you choose affects the look, feel, and lifespan of your design.

Here are the most common T-shirt fabric types:

1. 100% Cotton

  • Soft, breathable, and popular for casual wear

  • Absorbs ink well—great for screen printing and DTG

  • Slight shrinkage may occur after washing

2. Cotton-Polyester Blends

  • Less shrinkage, more durability

  • Often smoother for heat transfer vinyl (HTV)

  • Slight sheen can affect colour vibrancy

3. Tri-Blends (Cotton, Polyester, Rayon)

  • Soft and drapey

  • Premium feel, often used for fashion retail

  • Needs careful print planning due to stretch and mixed textures

Quick Tip:

Dark or richly coloured fabrics may require underbase printing (a white layer beneath your design) to make colours pop.

Colour Choice: It’s Not Just About Style

Colour can make or break your final product. Your digital artwork might look amazing on screen—but things change when ink hits fabric.

Things to consider:

  • Contrast is key: Light colours work best on dark shirts and vice versa

  • Fabric colour affects ink colour: Always test or mock up your design on the actual shirt colour

  • Some inks absorb more into darker fabrics, dulling the design

  • Use Pantone Matching System (PMS) colours for better accuracy, especially in screen printing

Tip for Designers:

Convert your colours to CMYK for DTG or spot colours for screen printing. Always check colour settings in your design file before sending it to print.

️ Choose the Right Printing Method for Your Design

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to printing. Each method has its pros and cons, and the best choice depends on your design, budget, and volume.

1. Screen Printing

  • Best for: Bold logos, block colours, large bulk orders

  • Pros: Long-lasting, vibrant, cost-effective in quantity

  • Cons: Not ideal for photo-like designs or small runs

2. DTG (Direct-to-Garment)

  • Best for: Full-colour designs, fine detail, small batches

  • Pros: Soft prints, no setup cost, unlimited colours

  • Cons: Slightly less vibrant on dark shirts; slower for large orders

3. Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

  • Best for: Names, numbers, personalised designs

  • Pros: Sharp lines, good for small batches

  • Cons: Less breathable, may peel with wear over time

4. Sublimation (Polyester Only)

  • Best for: All-over prints on white or light poly fabrics

  • Pros: Vibrant, permanent colour

  • Cons: Only works on polyester and light-coloured shirts

Transferring Your Design: What Files Do Printers Need?

You’ve designed your shirt, picked your fabric and print style. Now it’s time to send it to the printer—but file prep is critical.

Here’s what your printer expects:

✅ Preferred File Formats:

  • Vector files: .AI, .EPS, .PDF (perfect for logos and line art)

  • High-res raster files: .PNG, .TIFF, .PSD (300 DPI minimum)

  • Transparent backgrounds are essential for clean edges

✅ Make Sure You:

  • Convert text to outlines (so no fonts go missing)

  • Use actual shirt mockups to visualize placement

  • Include clear print size and positioning notes

  • Flatten your artwork to avoid accidental changes

Bonus Tip:

Name your files clearly, e.g. Smith_Family_Reunion_FrontLogo_WhiteTee.pdf. It saves time for both you and the printing team.

Quality Control: Why Working with a Pro Matters

There’s more to printing than pressing a button. A professional service like Custom T Shirt Printing Online handles:

  • Proofing your artwork before print

  • Matching colours to your fabric

  • Making sure placement is consistent across sizes

  • Recommending the best print method for your design

  • Offering express and bulk solutions from Melbourne to Brisbane and beyond

We work with top brands like AS Colour, Gildan, and JBS Wear, so you can expect fit, feel, and durability—every time.

✅ Final Checklist Before You Print

Before hitting send, run through this:

  1. Is your fabric choice matched to your design style?

  2. Are your colours set for print (CMYK or PMS)?

  3. Have you picked the right printing method?

  4. Is your artwork sized correctly and saved in a print-ready format?

  5. Have you checked mockups to confirm placement and clarity?

If you’re unsure on any of these—reach out to a professional.
